I’ve learned of some very shocking developments where a blogger friend of mine has been threatened with legal action over what she wrote about a product. I read the parts of the review that the company didn’t like and there is just no reason for this behavior… with the threats and insults. It’s the typical kind of stuff you find in a review, nothing scathing. In fact, it was an overall positive review. The blogger simply said that the product didn’t work for her and that’s what has this raving lunatic threatening to contact her big shot lawyers. Unbelievable. I never thought that my little hobby here could put me in such an awful situation. And that’s why I need to make some things clear about how I write reviews and what companies (and my readers) can expect. I would love to publicly bash the person making the legal threats but I don’t need her big shot lawyers coming after me too (yes, I am rolling my eyes right now).
My philosophy is pretty simple really. I aim to write honest reviews. That’s it. The whole point of reviewing something is to put your opinion out there to help others make the decision to buy the product or not. Without opinion and personal experience, the rest are simply product stats that can easily be read in the manufacturer’s description. While I do include stats, I believe the most important part of a review is the experience that the reviewer had with the product. It’s the only reason I read reviews and I know I’m not alone. So, my reviews will always have details about my experience with the product, good or bad. I will express my opinion and I will be honest and unbiased. I am not employed by a company that sends me a sample for review so I am not obligated to write it to suit them. Sending me a sample for review does not enter us into any kind of contract. I write in my own style and I won’t change that just because I had something negative to say about your product and you don’t like it.
Now, I’m not out there trying to tear apart everything I review. I think if you read my reviews, you’ll see that I try to keep in mind that just because the product didn’t work for me, it doesn’t mean it won’t for someone else. I’ll give the reason(s) why the product didn’t work for me. I won’t just say that I don’t like it without explaining why. This is the kind of information that I think people are really looking for. They don’t want to read a sales pitch.
I will be fair and honest in my reviews. If I have incorrect information, I’ll gladly change it but I won’t edit my personal experience to read the way a company wants it to. If I receive a defective product, I’ll contact the company before I post anything and we can work it out in a way that’s agreeable to both of us.
And this might seem like a silly thing for me to say but considering the recent developments with my blogger friend, I might as well cover my bases. I will talk about having orgasms when I’m reviewing a product meant to produce orgasms. Make sense? I thought so. I’m not writing erotica or anything but I’ll mention whether or not I could have orgasms with a sex toy. So, if you’re a company who makes/sells products meant to induce orgasms but you don’t think it’s classy to talk about orgasms, then I don’t want to review your product.

That’s crazy. The whole point of sending products to reviewers is for them to review… Good, or bad reviews, it gets the products out there from word of mouth. And if the product didn’t work for them, there’s no reason it wouldn’t work for someone else. Unless someone is outright slanderous without any due cause, I really think there should be no grounds for a lawsuit.

I can’t believe that a company would try that on. A toy supplied for a review is just that, it is given so that the reviewer can give their view on their experiences with it. Anything other than that wouldn’t be a review, it would be promotional material. I hope that you friend doesn’t let this get her down and that it all sorts itself out.
Luckily nothing ever came of it but other reviewers have had problems with this same company/person.
